Nastia Liukin Announces Engagement





2008 All-Around Olympic Champion, today announced her engagement to her long-term boyfriend, Matt Lombardi. Liukin announced her engagement via social media.




Liukin is a legend in the elite gymnastics world, having won back-to-back national titles as a junior in 2003 and 2004, and winning her first senior title in 2005. She finished second in the all-around at the 2005 World Championships and took homeGOLD medals on bars and beam. After battling through injuries, Liukin helped the USA team win the gold medal at the 2007 World Championships and also captured the gold on balance beam. In 2008, in addition to winning the Olympic All-Around gold medal, she captured the silver medal on balance beam and bars, and the bronze medal on floor exercise. She also helped the USA team win the silver medal.

Liukin officially retired from elite gymnastics in 2012, following the Olympic Trials. She is currently enrolled in New York University, with plans to graduate soon with a degree in sports management. She also established the famous Nastia Liukin Cup, which has been running annually since 2010, a competition open to the top Level 10 gymnasts in the country who qualify. Most recently, Liukin was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars, making it all the way to the semi-finals.

Lombardi is originally from Milton, Massachusetts and attended Boston College, where he played ice hockey for the Eagles and served as assistant captain during his senior year. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing in 2010, and he was later a member of the New Jersey Devils' and Pittsburgh Penguins' minor league affiliates until 2012. In March 2014, Lombardi co-founded VentureUp, a team coaching platform based in Boston. He currently serves as the company's COO.
