Brazilian Gymnasts Suspended For Racial Remarks

Three members of the Brazilian National Team
have been suspended due to racial comments
caught on video, according to BBC .
Arthur Nory Mariano , Fellipe Arakawa, and
Henrique Flores made comments to teammate

Angelo Assumpcao that were posted on Nory'sk
SnapChat story. They were filmed saying a smart
phone screen is white when working and black
when broken, and that grocery store bags are
white and trash bags black.

There was a second video posted where they say
the comments were a joke. Assumpcao appears
in this second video saying that there were no
hard feelings.

The three gymnasts have now been suspended
by Brazil's gymnastics federation for 30 days.
They are also expected to appear before a sports
tribunal, where Assumpcao is also likely to give
evidence.

Educafro, a Brazilian charity working with black
adolescents, has filed a criminal complaint, and
asked the athletes to pay for scholarships for 50
poor children as punishment.

On Saturday, Giovanny Harvey , Brazil's minister
of racial equality, said: "It's not a joke. This is a
crime."
The four gymnasts have since then recorded and
posted a video on Nory's instagram where they
apologize.
