The Balance Beam finals were a little bit different this
year due to the absence of two major balance beam final hopefuls: Aly Raisman of
USA and Larisa Iordache of Romania. Also, the presence of two graceful Netherland gymnast
and the presence of Russians Victoria Kamova.
2016 balance beam
finals is definitely going to be more challenging as the Chinese and Romanians knows
how to pull strings when it counts at the Olympics. These are my personal review
on the balance beam finals at 2015 world championships at Glasgow.
Eythora Thorsdottir (NED): what I love about this young gymnast is her
slow and swift movement making her incredibly difficult routine and connections
look effortless. Her spins and connections are fantastic even after a fall she
managed to finish her routine with a high difficulty of 5.7
Sanne Wevers (NED): She pulled up an impressive job and most stunning
to watch. Netherland gymnasts are great on this event and more graceful than
the rest. They looked confident and polished and she had her moment with a good
d-score of 5.7 same with her compatriot.
Wang Yan (CHN): My
opinion here is that every Chinese gymnast that makes it to the balance beam finals
is capable of a medal provided she stays on the equipment but they are quite inconsistent.
These gymnasts risk going for the extremely difficult skills which they are
capable of and most often than not fall off the equipment with a full point
off. Wang is capable of a medal at Rio Olympics on this event if she stays on
the beam. She came into this final with highest d-score of 6.4 which would have given her a sure gold or silver medal.
Victoria Kamova (RUS): I earlier commended this lady on
one of my tweet on the day of this final for fighting to stay on the beam. This
was amazing and uncharacteristic of her. She usually gives up and falls by
herself without a fight. Well I think this is maturity 101. With a difficulty of
5.7 and lots of balance check and
lost connections, I think she still did a nice job.
Pauling Schaefer (GER):
This is another strong gymnast with a 5.8
difficulty. Although started off with some disastrous wobbles but managed to
get back to her zone. The most interesting thing about her routine is how long
she fixes her eyes on that beam during her free walkover. She did a nice job,
although her initial wobbles cost her silver medal.
Elsabeth Black (CAN):
Another difficult packed routine which
would have earned a medal but was interrupted by a fall on her back handspring
to full twist. She had a nice routine of
6.0 d- score but that’s one of the
many surprises balance beam have to offer to chatter hopes of medal.
Simone Biles (USA): This is the most solid bb routine of the meet.
She was nearly perfect will a wobble until her front free walk over. The amazing
thing about the gymnast is that she is not done, she has more upgrades and
connections coming on for 2016. She came into this final with the highest
d-score. She and Wang of China came into this finals with the highest d-score
of 6.0 but look how their executions
have separated them.
Seda tutkhalian (rus):
This young gymnast had a very nice routine with a great style and packed
in difficulty 0 6.0 but that initial fall was not good for her at all. I thought
every other skill was perfect until the fal. Well, she is still young and we
expect to see more from her all the way to rio and beyound
