A Short Story Behind Anastasia Grishina

Anastasia Grishina is the youngest member of the 2012 Russian Olympic team. Nastia is not the only athlete in her family as she has three elder brothers, the oldest practices boxing, the middle practices soccer and the youngest plays chess.

Grishina’s mother has enrolled all her four children in gymnastics in order to stay healthy but her brothers called it quits and tried to convince their mother to pull Nastia out but Nastia didn’t want to quit. “I loved gymnastics, i wanted to prove i can do something” said Nastia.

When Anastasia was little her parents tried to enroll her in figure skating but coaches refused to take her as she was too old for the sport. “I didn’t get accepted to any sport, but i was lucky my first coach Olga Sikoro told my parents to leave me in the gymnastics section “.

Behind the beautiful artistry and grace, there is a tough girl struggling to survive. Anastasia’s father suffered a heart attack and her mother doesn’t work, Anastasia and her brothers bring the money to their struggling home.

The hard gymnastics training helps Anastasia to overcome her teenage problems. Nastia says her major quality is she can pull herself together. “Our biggest enemy is ourselves”.

Anastasia was the only member of the Russian team to not qualify to any individual final however she placed twelfth in the all around qualification but did not advance to the final due to two per country rule. Grishina helped her team to win silver with scores 14.700 on bars and 12.466 on floor.
