Women’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championship team named

The Women’s Artistic Gymnastics World Championship team has been selected after two days of trials at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, that concluded last Saturday October 3rd.
The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships are due to be held at the end of this month from 23rd October – 1st November at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow Scotland. The standard of competition throughout the trials was fervent, resulting in the selection of a very strong squad. Reigning All Around Australian Champion Georgia Godwin (QLD) will be making her World Championship debut and she will be joined by five Victorian’s including;
Georgia Rose-Brown, Madelaine Leydin, 2012 Olympian Larrissa Miller, Mary-Anne Monckton and Kiara Munteanu, with Emily Little (WA) also adding her Olympic experience to the group to round out Australia’s seven women team. Emma Nedov (NSW) has been named as the reserve.
At last year’s World Championships, in Nanning China, Australia managed to finish 7th overall with Rose-Brown the highest finishing individual overall, in 21st place, and Larrissa Miller doing exceptionally well on the floor to finish 6th in the final. Monckton is coming into form at the right time and she brings a wealth of international experience to the group. Being named as an Olympic reserve in 2012 her burning desire to go one step further will drive her motivation for a strong team performance at these Championships.
The World Championships stand as a pivotal qualification event for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and our team will be looking to finish inside the top eight in the qualification rounds in Glasgow.
Mark Rendell, the CEO of Gymnastics Australia, commended the effort expelled by these gymnasts to attain selection and stated the desire to continue to perform well.
“To be selected to represent Australia in Glasgow is a true privilege and one that these women both deserve and should be proud of,” said Mr Rendell.
“We have a great team heading to the World Championships and we urge them on, to continue their great form and strive for Olympic Qualification.”
The team will be prepared and led by Head Coach Peggy Liddick and Team Manager Liz Chetkovich and will be departing for Scotland on the 15th October.
Gymnastics Australia congratulates all the athletes that competed at the trials and wishes those selected all the best as their attention now turns to Glasgow, and further on the Road to Rio.
