Ponor officially announced her return to gymnastics in early March,
coming back with hopes of making a third Olympic team. She plans to
compete in Glasgow—her first outing of 2015—which will be a very most
important competition leading up to Rio. As one of Romania’s most
decorated female gymnasts, she would bring a wealth of experience to the
Romanian team, but being 27 years old takes a serious toll on the
body.
Ponor has been struggling with a tendon in her foot—not only pain but
also a feeling that it could freeze up. Ponor and the Romanian
gymnastics program are being careful, as Ponor has felt the pain before,
so avoiding a devastating blow is crucial. Requiring much patience,
Ponor paused her training on floor and vault, but continues to train
beam. Anca Grigoras, technical director of the Romanian Gymnastics
Federation, says the issue has not hindered Ponor’s training program,
but they are being careful in order to avoid a serious injury. Ponor
will continue to prepare for the World Championships in Glasgow.
