Italy's Vanessa Ferrari has been diagnosed with mononucleosis

Italy's Vanessa Ferrari has announced on her Facebook page that she has been diagnosed with mononucleosis, a common illness that can leave its patient feeling tired and weak for weeks or months.
"As you had noticed that ever since the Stuttgart cup, I couldn't perform my best anymore" wrote Ferrari. "I was not feeling well and I didn't know why." "Finally today I got a response that removed all doubts. In these past months, I have been suffering from a mononucleosis." "The full recovery won't happen immediately but I will try to do my best." Infectious mononucleosis (mono) is often called the kissing disease. The virus that causes mono is transmitted through saliva, so you can get it through kissing, but you can also be exposed through a cough or sneeze, or by sharing a glass or food utensils with someone who has mono. However, mononucleosis isn't as contagious as some infections, such as the common cold. Mononucleosis is most often seen in teens and young adults. The most common symptoms of the virus are a high fever, a severe sore throat, weakness and fatigue. It goes away on its own, but lots of rest and good self-care can help its patient feel better. Nevertheless, the virus may become active from time to time without causing any symptoms. We still yet to know if this will force the Italian gymnast to withdraw from the upcoming European championships.
